We talked with the nutritionist Angela Marreros from Home Health Portalwho tells us what happens when we drink coffee in aid and gives us some recommendations:

It is not recommended to ingest it on an empty stomach, even worse, if the person suffers from some type of heartburn, reflux or gastritis.

For the specialist, what is recommended is to drink coffee accompanied with other foods. And the ideal is to consume it last, because the antioxidants are better preserved, and preferably without sugar so as not to add unnecessary calories.

It is not that the habit of drinking coffee on an empty stomach is harmful to health or causes any discomfort by itself, but it is contraindicated in the case of people who have conditions such as reflux or gastritisas it can cause heartburn.

2. What happens when I drink coffee without other food?

For people who are in good health, there would be no major problem drinking coffee on an empty stomach or without accompanying it with some other type of food. Only in the case of people diagnosed with diseases such as gastritis, this could lead to mishaps in the stomach, such as heartburn.

3. What is recommended when consuming coffee?

Only in the case of people with gastritis or reflux, it is recommended to accompany coffee with other foods to create a shield in the digestive system. If these conditions are not present, it can be consumed alone and/or on an empty stomach without problems.

In the case of people diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, it is recommended to drink coffee 1 hour before or 1 hour after meals, since coffee interferes with the absorption of this nutrient.

4. What is the maximum amount of coffee that can be consumed per day?

It is recommended for adults to consume up to 400mg of caffeine per day, taking into account that 1 cup of coffee has approximately 90mg. It is important to remember that any food in excess is harmful to health, therefore, constantly exceeding this amount could have negative consequences for the body.

5. What are the benefits of drinking coffee?

The benefits of drinking coffee are the following:

✔️ Count as your liquids of the day. Although we drink coffee and this immediately leads us to urinate, it does not have a diuretic effect.

✔️ Improve alertness and mental performance. Studies indicate that these benefits are obtained by consuming 75mg of caffeine.

✔️ Pre workout: Consuming at least 3 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight one hour before exercise improves performance and endurance capacity during this practice.

✔️ Could help with constipation. Coffee is known to stimulate bowel movements, but studies to confirm this are still lacking.

✔️ It has antioxidants that help reduce the risk of certain diseases. Moderate regular coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver cancer (and potentially other cancers as well), non-alcoholic liver disease. However, it is advisable to obtain these antioxidants also from fruits, vegetables and cereals.

6. What are the negative effects of drinking coffee?

The negative effects of drinking coffee are the following:

✔️ Affects the quality and quantity of sleep. It is recommended to take it at least 6 hours before going to bed.

✔️ Reduces the absorption of iron, WHEN IT IS TAKEN ALONG WITH MEALS RICH IN IRON. This is due to the tannins, so it is best to drink coffee 1 hour before or after your main meals.

✔️ It can trigger anxiety: that’s why don’t exceed 400 mg / day.

✔️ Caffeine can be addictive and caffeine withdrawal is now listed as a disorder by both the WHO and the American Psychiatric Association.

✔️ It can generate reflux so you should not take it fasting if you suffer from this discomfort or gastritis.

✔️ It can increase blood pressure, so people with hypertension should not exceed 3 cups a day
