In the picture

The publication “Woman Street Photographers” presents 100 contemporary female photographers and thus proves that there are endless possibilities of perspectives and attitudes.

It can be pointless to debate whether there is a masculine and a feminine view of the world. It is undeniable that there are different perspectives, approaches, assumptions and interests when it comes to depicting life on the streets. In photography, as in all expressive media as well, the question will hopefully soon be obsolete as to which gender is primarily responsible for the processes, perspectives or phenomena on the streets and in life in general as image, music, literature or art in to carry, translate or process the world.

Prestel’s publication “Woman Street Photographers” lists 100 photographers, amateurs and professionals from around the world today, to help us all see photography for what it is: the reproduction of nuances, moods, Situations and realities on the streets of this world. Unsurprisingly, what you’re looking at resonates and is much more than saying, Ah, so that’s the female gaze!

The photographers presented in the publication prove with their work that there are infinite possibilities of perspectives and attitudes – and that is what can be unsettling, but also intoxicatingly beautiful. So if one should agree on something fundamental in times like these, then it is most likely that there is not just one image and one access.

The publication is also interesting in that street photography no longer needs to be practiced by die-hard professionals to be recognized as such. Not all, but many of the women photographers gathered here are amateurs, women who have made a change of direction in their lives through photography and are often also involved or working in other fields.

It’s about passion, openness, assertiveness and accessibility. The latter probably also goes hand in hand with the fact that technological developments in photography enable new and different ways of working.

What other place than the street would be more suitable to show that the street and pictures of it really belong to everyone.
