A privilege. A dream. A great emotion. These are just three ways to describe the moment they lived Marcelo Arce, Frederic Croce and who writes this note, Federico Lanciaby sharing talks and a special private dinner with a handful of men who knew how to bring immeasurable joy to an entire country: the protagonists of the sporting feat of 1986, those who brought the World Cup that was played in Mexico.
The reason for this incredible visit? The official presentation of the wines of the champions, which was held in Mendoza by express decision of the champions themselves, and thanks to the initiative of Mendoza Vineyards, who called and brought several of them to show their wines.
With press specialized in the matter, the wines with a paired menu Hyatt Hotel de Mendoza, in its restaurant Bistro M. The glorious soccer squad that won the ’86 World Cup is launched on the market in wines with two labels. With grapes from Agrelo, and from the hand of the winemaker Denis Vicino of Mendoza Vineyards, come to light The Final Malbec Y Blend Heroes.
“The truth is that we wanted to do something together again,” said Oscar Ruggeri at the dinner, who explained that it was the commercial manager of Mendoza Vineyards, Jorge del Valle, who came up with the idea of making a wine in Mendoza. A project that he returned to unite in the same dream all the members of that selected winner. Watch the video where Oscar tells us in first person how this project was created:
“Ruggeri told us that he wanted to do something with all the guys on the team, because after the World Cup they had never done anything together again,” says Denis Vicino, the winemaker who has guided them throughout the process. “When we found out we were very excited and we had a first meeting in Buenos Aires with Ricardo Giusti, Jorge Burruchaga, Nery Pumpido and Oscar Ruggeri”.
After sending samples, the campus decided on a Malbec and a icon: that’s how they were born The Final Malbec Y blended heroes, an assamblage of red grapes made up of 50% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot with 100% grapes from the Origin Group estate in Agrelo. Jorge Burruchaga spoke with MDZ about what this wine means for the group:
Are wines very interesting for the symbolic value it has for Argentines and also because they have respected the character of the terroir, with excellent varietal typicity and a promising blend that has much more to offer.
“When Jorge proposed the idea to me, I shared it with the group and they all said yes to the touch, as I said. And that’s where we started with the names. And these titles came up, which in the end is what we live through,” says Oscar Ruggeri. He watches the following video where “El Cabezón” tells it in the first person:
“Nothing is going to separate us. This is what we have lived with Bilardo since we were young. We may have differences like all people in little things, but the group is always united and this wine proves it,” explains Ruggeri.
When deciding the design of labels and packaging, the feeling and the heart were what prevailed. On the white label The final with the number 86 in light blue and white, a photo of the National Team can be seen in the Azteca Stadium, while Heroes It is a black label with a capsule in the colors of the Argentine flag, in which the World Cup and the number 86 stand out in gold.
In addition to individual bottles, La Final comes in an elegant case of six and Heroes in a case of three bottles accompanied by a small book. The commercialization is done by Mendoza Vineyards and the distribution will be carried out by Wine Co Distributor of the Winery.
A special dinner
Although the dinner service was that of Bistro M, the restaurant of Park Hyatt Mendoza, the place was not the restaurant but a space specially prepared to share this farewell meal of the province with intimacy and tranquility.
For the appetizer, the select diners could choose between a Caesar salad with chicken, crispy smoked bacon, croutons and their typical dressing; or a salad of arugula, figs, prosciutto and parmesan chips.
As a main, the options were some delicious veal ravioli in its juice, roasted pumpkin and rosemary; or a pink salmon with garlic mayonnaise and black olive paste, accompanied by mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables.
The finishing touch was the dessert, which consisted of a chocolate and passion fruit ingot with fresh strawberry compote.
values of a group
In it wine as in football values are formed. And this group more than anyone knows that the team was above all else. “That Bilardo instilled in us and we maintain it to this day. The wine comes to reaffirm what the DT taught us. And it is a good winewhich most consumers will like,” says Jorge Burruchaga, who played in France and there formed his palate in this area.
“We were lucky to know the glory, and to continue forming a beautiful human group. The purpose of this is to constitute a help fund for those who need it from the group: we are not interested in economic gain in itself,” explained Tapia.
“The values of good manhood, of true friendship that Bilardo transmitted to us were engraved on us. What we do is not to appear. The context in which we played football was very different, especially economically, and for that reason we decided to make these wines: so that what we can produce constitutes a fund of money for whoever in the group needs it, needs it. It is not that we are going to divide the profits or share the money. ‘You have to help each other for life’, Our DT told us… and that’s what we’re going to do,” Burruchaga assured.
The directors of Mendoza Vineyards participated in the dinner that we were able to share, including Oscar Ruggeri, Jorge Burruchaga, Ricardo Gusti, Carlos “Chino” Tapia, Sergio Batista, Héctor Enrique and Oscar Garré.
In addition to individual bottles, The final Comes in a stylish box of six and Heroes in a case of three bottles accompanied by a small book. The commercialization is done by Mendoza Vineyards and the distribution will be carried out by Wine Co, Distributor of the Winery.
